Because of our vendor-neutral policy, we rarely publish articles submitted by software vendors. However, we accepted this one because it's about a key knowledge sharing application and because it gives us the opportunity to comment on SharePoint's impact on the marketplace.
In this commentary, I'll address the following issues:
Competitive intelligence vs. business intelligence Competitive intelligence (CI) is both a product and a process. The product is "actionable" information that can be used to take specific actions (e.g. prepare a winning sales proposal). The process is the systematic means of acquiring, analyzing, and evaluating it (see Competitive intelligence: How and where to find it). Products and processes can either be tactical (e.g. compiling a competitor profile) or strategic (e.g. identifying areas for future investment).
