FAST + SharePoint: What now?

This month, employees of the Norwegian search engine company FAST will become employees of Microsoft. Last month, Microsoft released four Web parts that allow organizations to access certain FAST functions through SharePoint.

What does all this mean for the future development of search in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS)? The short answer you get from both Microsoft and FAST is "We'll figure it out over the next 12 - 18 months." But after attending the FAST Summit conference in Boston last month, I think it's possible to see some long term trends and make some educated guesses. This article summarizes what I heard, expands on the themes, and draws some tentative conclusions about what happens next.
