This article, we discuss SharePoint techniques, insights, and tips contributed by Dan Antion, Vice President for Information Services at American Nuclear Insurers (ANI). They fall into five categories:
Dan's SharePoint deployment experience reflects a trend to merge enterprise content management (ECM) systems (which are document-centric) with business process management (BPM) systems (which are workflow and process-oriented).
About ANI ANI is a 30-person firm in suburban Hartford, Connecticut. It has only one office, but its employees travel extensively (both within the U. S. and internationally), and many are either permanent or temporary telecommuters. One-third to one-half of the staff is out of the office on any one day. ANI works with a wide variety of business partners, such as policy holders, technology support contractors, and legal and financial advisors. SharePoint is being used to replace fragmented existing systems with a single technology and as a catalyst for developing common policies and procedures.
Dan Antion, Vice President for Information Services, is the point person for SharePoint deployment. A chemistry major with graduate work in business and experience at accounting firms PwC and KPMG, Dan is what we call a "boundary spanner" who can bridge the gaps between computer technology and business functions.
Initially, the focus of ANI's SharePoint implementation was document management. At this stage, the objectives were to provide reliable, secure access to company information for its mobile workforce and to capture the knowledge of more experienced employees for the benefit of new staff.
