Pre-roundtable primer: Tagging strategies

This teleconference is designed as a backgrounder for the May 17 roundtable "Bridging the gap between folksonomies and taxonomies." Its purpose is to orient you to the roundtable context and help you understand the concepts and tools discussed.

    • Back-of-the-book indexing
    • Library cataloging
    • Bibliographic databases
  • Automated indexing
  • Folk taxonomies ("folksonomies") and social tagging

How to store terms and categories

  • Encoding schemes
    • Dublin Core
    • Classic thesaurus
    • Ontologies (SKOS and others)
  • Metadata repositories

How to merge and transfer terms

  • Mapping and merging techniques
  • Transfer formats: XML and RSS

FORMAT
The format uses Webex for video and teleconferencing for the audio. If you aren't allowed to install the Webex program on your computer, you can still participate. Call for details.

COST
$500 per person (members), $750 per person (nonmembers). Nonmembers who register for this roundtable automatically become members of the Society of Knowledge Base Publishers (and can register for the "Good to great search " roundtable at a reduced rate).

Additional people from the same team can attend at a reduced rate of $375 (includes full Society membership).
