Women on corporate boards
A faculty member is researching the presence of women on Boards of Directors of about 200 corporations. Another aspect of the research is to investigate the presence of the same individuals on several boards. I am not aware of any reference source or organization that would keep track of this kind of information. I do know that the Conference Board compiles organization charts for corporations but perhaps somebody knows if that organization or another association or publisher keeps track of the actual composition of corporate boards. You might try Catalyst at http://www.catalystwomen.org. It appears from their website that they have the information you need, but it may not be free.
Who Know Who lists by name - the boards sat on and others on the board, by company - who sits on the board and their affiliations. Gives a lot of relationships between board members. Who Knows Who
Since each member of a public company's Board of Directors must be named in company's annual proxy filing, you may pull the Director's section of the proxy and identify the individuals you are looking for. Then a full-text search of the EDGAR database (through a product like Disclosure's Global Access, Global Securities' LiveEdgar or Lexis' EDGAR database) should bring up any other board that person sits on.
The Conference Board has a new report titled: Board Diversity in U.S. Corporations (Research Report 1230-99). This report is based on the findings of three working groups whose participants considered board diversity in the context of improving shareholder value. The report looks at what motivates boards to increase their diversity; trends on U.S. boards; best practices in recruiting; and best practices in board operations including self evaluation, committee assignments, and compensation. I can fax you the TOC if you are still interested. You can also purchase the report by calling The Conference Board's Customer Service at 212-339-0345. You can call me if you have any questions at 212-339-0212.
Other replies made to the author Judith Siess suggested calling someone at Fortune magazine as they frequently cover this issue. (If necessary I will suggest the patron contact the authors of the articles from Fortune.) This article from our Contemporary Women's Issues database could provide some good information for you. Contemporary Women's Issues is included in Electric Library, which I believe your library has. Good luck. Title: Women's Board Representation Inches Upward
Corporate board members are reported in company proxy statements, and can also be found in Moody's U.S. Company CD, Dun & Bradstreet's Million $ Database, Disclosure, and other sources. I would think you should also be able to search by name in these sources, to turn up other companies where the individual appears. If the woman is prominent enough, a search in Who's Who or some other biographical database or directory will turn up the other boards they're serving on. Gale Research used to have a product that does exactly what you need, called BoardLink, but it has been discontinued. Conference Board's organization-chart information is only available by fee. There is an association for corporate governance that may be able to help you out. I actually worked on an identical project about 6 months ago, and used Moody's to generate a list of board members by company, which was then analyzed for the presence/absence of women. To be honest, I'm not sure what happened with the research after that! Our sister company Diversified Search has been very involved in executive-women issues. Please get in touch if I can help you further.
